Agonizing over whether to do custom work

Posted by ellen on September 6, 2010 at 12:31 PM

I've always had a 'no custom work' policy.  I made a bride's dress for a friend in the '90's, and after that I said to myself "never again".

By the time the dress was done we were no longer friends.  She was pregnant at the time and the hormones  *completely* changed her personality--she became super waffly and also really picky and nervous.  She knew exactly how she wanted the dress to look--she had a vision-- but had no way to explain it to me.   Also, every time she came for a fitting, her body had grown one or two inches.  It  turned out all right,  but she never paid me (I had asked for a token amount--the bulk of the service was her wedding gift from me)  and the friendship just fizzled after that.

I have made a few things for people since then, but the nervous perfectionism that I have when I'm specifically making something to someone's requirements made the process so unpleasant that I figured it wasn't worth it.  However, I'm starting to think that if I could get over what is obviously my own issue, I could really make very good money and also help make a lot of people's dreams come true.  We all love the idea of participating in a creative process--and having a craftsperson do your specific bidding is a delightfully old-fashioned concept that I can get behind.  I get so many requests for custom bags--probably three or four a week even though I say I don't do them.  They vary from just a simple 'will you ever make this exact bag again?' to "I have an old coat I want to send you and have you make me my dream bag".  Yikes!  So many things could go wrong.  But they could also go right.  And then I would get to use the word "bespoke" (even though I'm not quite sure what it means).

As for getting it right before passing into the afterlife, that doesn't fit with my belief system, so no pressure there.

I keep double checking this post, for confirmation on whether or not you decided to do custom work. haha
I have been craving a structured overnighter with your sailing ship and a heart forever! It would be a good bag to pack my stuff in and bring on the ships with me when I am pirating. It would make the other pirates want to plunder me riches though. Arrrr! ;)

Hey, I am not upset about the custom bag, I know that the "perfect" Bonspiel will come up for air and I will see it and stars will fill my eyes and my heart will pound.... haha, I bought a pair of Fluevogs for my 30th b-day gift instead. But I'm still here, salivating.... hoping for a custom one someday.

The recycled bags and pouches are AWESOME.... That takes so much more work than buying hides, I feel. You can really show your skills with them though, the way you reconstruct them to use the existing pockets is really amazing! I often think about how awesome that helvetica wallet was, and I still use my white clutch with the heart on it frequently. The pufferfish bag is starting to show wear, but I still get comments every single day that I use it! (hmmm... wouldn't mind another one.... lol) (and an owl bag... or skeletons... or that old guy...... ) OOXX

Thanks for that, Jennifer. You gave it a lot of thought! I guess the added weirdness is that the person would not even get to touch the item in person before committing to buying it. (since I mostly do mail-order to faraway customers).
And you know, as scary as it is and annoying and time-wasting sometimes, I have had great leaps of creativity come out of working with someone else's desires. That's how the entire line of recycled bags came about--from my friend Roberta on Salt Spring who just kept bringing me leather jackets and asking me to make her bags out of them (she's hard to say no to...)
Julie, your Majesty, I'm sorry I went and hid after discussing a custom bag with you. I really want to make you something, that's why I didn't just say "NO" right from the start, but then I undermined the whole thing by subconsciously getting amnesia about it. Sigh. I am also not comfortable with charging more. But I think I would need to. Still messing it all about in my mind. Thanks for caring, guys.

Having recently made that very same request of you recently, I have to say that I utterly respected your initial response. Every business need a plan and the fact that yours specifies "no custom work" is the reason we have those tedious-to-write documents in the first place! You gave a straightforward answer without being apologetic and I have to say that while I was a teensy bit disappointed (who doesn't want their dream camera "purse"??) it also made me think about my own business plan and how flexible (or not) I wanted it (and me!) to be. But I digress... this is about you. IMHO, doing custom work means charging more because you are going to spend more hours conversing with the client before you even thread a needle and this would distract from your usual business and disrupt the rhythm. An old, unseen coat may not yield enough material or be difficult to work with. The client may decide that it doesn't meet their expectations and then you could have a potentially unhappy customer spreading evil about you. I say stick to your original guns - make your product, display it and sell it. Easier that way. You get to stay ulcer-free and your clients remain happy. Hope that helps!! :-)

Well, I love my bonspiel bag and would LOVE another one. I would pay for a custom... and I make bags myself... so if I would pay you to make one that means it's worth it. Worth it to invest in your business, to promote you wherever I go, to spread the bonspiel love.... everything you make is incredibly rad!!! I get the same jitters when I do custom work too, so I understand. OOXX

Yeah, screw the man!
Seriously thanks for that Roxy. I'm thinking of just offering custom options on color and print, but not necessarily making totally new patterns/designs.

Roxy says...
I would be lying if I said that the thought of it, didn't elate me. lol
It would bring much joy to many. But all in all, you must stay true to you. Weigh out the pros and cons, and make the choice. When you do, let us know. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. People wouldn't request these things of you, if they didn't have faith in you and your ability. Maybe start a seperate etsy store for custom orders? Under a different name, incase you don't want to continue that path? BonspielCustomCreations? Just some feedback thoughts. haha
Either way you rock Ellen. Good luck in your decision. Don't let the man get you down!
